Tips for your new kitchen installation or refurbishment

JW McDonald Kitchens & Bathrooms have started work on a kitchen refurbishment in the Bromley area. The kitchen was quite small in a large flat that was easy access with an original kitchen from when the flats were built.

The client had already had Benchmarx Kitchens  create the kitchen plan which makes things easy to install. The one thing that most kitchens plans will not tell you is when the walls are out of square.

This means that when you remove the old kitchen units and install the new base units,  when the wall the units go back to the wall they will not be aligned with the wall. This problem is more common than you think and creates problems for your worktop joins. It will also means that you will have a gap starting to appear coming away from the corner unit which could result in a 20-40 gap sometimes.

When we come across this problem there are a few ways to combat this issue

1) The issue can be resolved by floating the wall with a backing plaster called hard wall.  If you put a 20-40mm timber batten at the far corner of the wall and plaster back to the corner where the base unit is square this reduce the gap and get you out of trouble.

2) Buy a wider worktop because most worktops come 600mm width. If you buy one wider than 600mm you can cut the worktop to suite the wall misalignment.

3) Install worktop up-stand. This is normally about 20-30 thick and is 100mm tall.  This can give the kitchen a individual look that can be used instead of tiling.

4) Installing a tiled splash back is very good way to hide the problem but if the gap is about 40mm we will have to use a tile backer board first and then tile the walls

This kitchen refurbishment in Bromley, I spoke to the client and he went with a tiled splash back which worked a treat.
