JW McDonald Kitchens & Bathrooms have work on a many bathroom refurbishment in the Beckenham & Bromley area. We had a potential client ask for our advice on a wet room which was leaking from different areas and wanted to find out if we could help.
The client had asked if we could take up the wet room floor and install a new shower tray or some how fix the wet room shower pan or tray.
This means that we would have try to find the source of the leak first, remove the old floor and then reinstall a new tray, pan and floor complete. When we come across this type of problem there are a few ways to combat this issue.I also asked for photos of the wet-room to see if there were any clues to what other issue could be the problem
My conclusion below:
1)The first potential problem we found was in one of the photos the previous installer had used green moister resistant plaster in the shower or wet room area.
This would be the potential first problem because in a wet room or shower area or standard shower enclosures area the best boards to use are 12mm cement boards as standard.
2) If it’s a wet room shower enclosure area I would use 12mm cement boards and then I would use a tanking fabric over the top. In the photos the client sent over this tanking fabric was not visible so this was an even bigger problem.
3) The other potential problem was the wet room shower tray / pan had about 2 inch gaps both sides so if this was not rectified this was a potential issues
My advice below:
My advice was that from the start there would need to be cement boards in the wet shower enclosed area and tanking of some kind installed. The other problem is with a wet room if the tanking is damaged in any way the hole process will need to be started again.
The client had been told by another bathroom fitter that a patch repair job could be done on the wet room but I would always advise against patch repair jobs if the process has not been completed properly in first place.
